South African Education Minister in the Counstitutional Court

The Constitutional System of the Republic of South Africa

The primary constitutional document of the South African system is the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa (1996). This Constitution was adopted on the 8th of May 1996 and forms the supreme law of the Republic of South Africa. A lengthy document, it is notable for a comprehensive Bill of Rights and a strong emphasis upon principles of equality, democracy and governmental accountability. We make available several versions of this document:

  • Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996
    • Our web version, incorporating all constitutional amendments up to the Constitution Twelfth Amendment Act of 2005
    • This version excludes the lengthy Schedules to the Constitution after Schedule 1
